Houghton and Nye have adopted a "food-centered" theme and use this to organize the concepts. They suggest alternate means for creating and switching up a daily routine using each of their categories; e.g., Fruits and Vegetables=Range and Flexibility, Dairy=Breathing. Among many other things, exercises, duets, and a practice log (of which the authors encourage duplication) are some of the many resources included in this book. The numerous analogies and parallels that are made really help to solidify the significance of each skill and activity, their place within a daily routine, and how imperative it is to include them.
Our basic human need for sustenance and nutrition is a vital connection to the function of each of these elements of healthy horn playing and musicianship. Where so many of the books that target beginning horn players fall short, Recipe for Success provides the resources necessary for the well-rounded, healthy, and solid foundation that every horn player needs. This book appeals to horn players of all ages, is comprehensive and easy to read and understand, and gives suggestions for ways in which approaches for different learning styles may be implemented.

The system is good for most brass instruments including trombone, trumpet, euphonium, or alto horn. At this time, we have not yet developed the adapters needed for cornet, french horn, or tuba mouthpieces.
"The Brass Gym" contains a daily basics routine developed from a synthesis of our experiences from more than 50 combined years of touring as performers and educators throughout the world. The workout consists of exercises that cover comprehensively the basic aspects of wind playing. It can also be used as a warm-up activity as the exercises are ordered in a gentle "ramp up" with demand increasing throughout the workout.
When practiced daily, for ALL brass players, the Cichowicz Flow Studies, Caruso Isometric exercises and the Lip Flexibility Drills, (especially the Frank Brown Lip Slurs) have helped me and my students develop characteristic sounds, range and endurance. My students do all of these in each lesson. We also audiate and sing and whistle our parts as close to in tune as possible. .
For this project I have chosen 46 of the most frequently requested works on orchestral horn auditions based on lists in Douglas Hill's book Collected Thoughts on Teaching and Learning, Creativity, and Horn Performance (available from Amazon here) and Arthur La Bar's Horn Player's Audition Handbook, and reproduced the standard excerpts taken from the original parts. By doing this, I've provided the visual and typographical accuracy of the original part. I have attempted to include as many of the important passages of each work as possible, but unlike the Thompson Edition, this project is not an attempt to be comprehensive. I have included more passages than most of the standard horn excerpt books, but in some works (such as Ein Heldenleben) it would have been impossible to include all the important passages without reproducing the entire part, which lies outside the scope of this project. I have also tried to include enough material before and after each passage so as not to exclude music that might be requested on an audition, and to give the reader some context.
Catharine Beecher was one of the first pioneers to create an awareness of fitness in America. As a strong advocate for the inclusion of physical education in schools as well as daily exercises for both sexes, she developed a program of calisthenics that were performed to music. When Beecher established the Hartford Female Seminary in 1823, it was the first major U.S. educational institution for women to implement physical education courses as part of the program.
